System management
The management of systems in general is becoming steadily more important. This also applies to the management of the emergency power supply, which usually forms part of a large (ICT) installation. In such cases it is important that the UPS* can be integrated into the existing IT network. This can be done in different ways, e.g. by making use of the WEB/SNMP cards that are placed in the UPS. The status of the UPS can be viewed via a web browser. If an (important) change takes place in the status of the system (e.g. a system failure), then an e-mail can be sent automatically to the person directly involved.
The UPS can also be integrated into an existing network management tool such as HP Openview, which the network manager can easily install using the supplied MIBs. The network manager will then receive all (failure) messages relating to status changes in the UPS and he or she can at all times obtain data on the UPS, such as the ingoing voltage and the UPS load.
Alongside these options, it is also possible to go a step further in the management field. The management can be confined to the user/owner himself, but can also be transferred to the service organization of ELINEX. In the latter case, the management is placed in the hands of ELINEX and constitutes an integral part of the service contract.
Management by the user
Products such as Powervision are used for this purpose. These can monitor a single UPS as well as numerous UPSs at numerous locations. For organizations with a large number of branches and at least one UPS at every location, this is the ideal solution for maintaining an overview of a crucial part of the power supply, namely the UPS. Powervision thus keeps an eye on all sublocations from the main location, allowing the managers based at the main location to monitor the underlying locations.
Management by ELINEX Power Solutions
If Elinex Power Solutions is given access (in consultation with the customer) to the monitoring server(s) via e.g. a VPN connection, it can support the monitoring process. Alternatively, customers can leave the monitoring entirely to ELINEX in combination with a service contract. By means of periodic reporting, sound advice can be given on the monitored systems.
Outsourcing the management to ELINEX offers many advantages. The managers of ELINEX carry out their management task 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is in contrast with the situation at many customers where the monitoring of the power supply, often across a great many branches, is always a matter of secondary importance. The constant monitoring makes it possible to immediately spot that e.g. the temperature is too high in a certain environment, the supplied mains voltage is too low or that the connected load in consumed electrical power is constantly rising. In such situations the people of ELINEX Power Solutions respond adequately and the pre-agreed protocol ensures that measures are taken immediately. An additional advantage is that managers/owners receive periodic reports from ELINEX Power Solutions. In this way, remote management becomes an integrated part of the service contract.
* Apart from the UPS, the EPG can be similarly incorporated into the available management programmes of ELINEX Power Solutions.
